There are a lot of blogs out there about food allergies and intolerances, so why another one? Because I'm not a very good cook and I'd like to be able to not only pronounce the ingredients that I use, but also afford them. In some cases, I'd settle for being able to find them.
I figure I'm not the only one like that in the world, so this blog is dedicated to everyone who lives with a limited diet, a limited budget, and limited culinary skill. Trust me when I say that if I can get the recipes featured here to work, than you can, too.
So what allergies am I going to focus on? Mainly the ones that apply to my family and myself. Most of them aren't, strictly speaking, allergies, as that word has a fairly narrow definition. But they're all foods that someone I know can't eat without extreme distress. A not entirely comprehensive list follows:
Gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and their cleverly named variations)
MSG (mono-sodium glutamate, a tasty additive endemic to Chinese buffets that gives me migraines from hell)
Dairy (lactose, specifically, and more or less easily remedied by an over the counter pill)
Peanuts (now this is an allergy, and a bad one at that)
Soy (more of an intolerance in this case, but still annoying)
Cabbage (related, oddly enough, to the lactose intolerance mentioned above)
I may, from time to time, also make mention of things appropriate to those with diabetes, though the main focus will be on actual allergies and intolerances.
